Shop Your Friend’s Closet

With the holidays officially in the rearview mirror, your wallet can finally start its recovery journey. But your style? That should definitely keep moving forward. This is the perfect time of year to take stock of what’s hanging in your closet—and maybe those gifts that missed the mark (sorry, Aunt Linda).

Back when I ran My Signature Look, one of my most in-demand services was the “Closet Intervention,” where I’d spend three hours (sometimes way more) diving into a client’s wardrobe with laser focus. Sure, sorting your clothes into three piles—(1) Keep, (2) Donate, and (3) Repurpose (hello, jean-shorts-from-jeans transformation!)—is practically a rite of passage these days. But you’ve got to be mentally ready for it. If you’re not there yet, press pause. Then, when you are, grab a friend or a personal stylist to hold your hand through the tough decisions.

Once you’ve conquered the big cleanout, you may realize you still need a few basics. For the pieces you’re donating or repurposing anyway, why not turn it into something fun? Host a clothing swap with friends and neighbors. Make it a whole vibe—music, snacks, and moral support—because no one needs an audience when they tear up over that old concert T-shirt.

A few ways to elevate your “shop your friends” experience:

  • Borrow a clothing rack so dresses are easy to sift through.

  • Sort everything by size or type to cut down on chaos.

  • Use vintage bowls to corral earrings, rings, and bracelets—instant boutique energy.

And as you’re browsing the tables, remember: you’re not just grabbing cute things on a whim. Look for pieces with a purpose—a new work suit, a dress for a friend’s spring wedding, or a necklace to jazz up your trusty little black dress. Not only are you giving your old favorites a new home—you’re building community in the process.

Happy Swapping!
