Fall’s Singular Sensation: Dos and Don’ts

There are a couple of rules for pulling off a monochromatic ensemble, and they have more to do with the subtle boundaries of color precision. First, fall is the perfect time to don a warm-hued look from head-to-toe. The luxuriant feel of dark browns, purples, and reds evokes confidence with a warm, cozy appeal.

Let’s start with the dos.

  • When breaking up the ensemble across the top, bottom, and layers, it’s okay to vary the shade slightly. For black or white looks, however, stick to the same shade for a sleek silhouette. An all-dark-brown palette might pair espresso slacks with a chocolate turtleneck sweater, while burgundy can handle tonal variations, too.

  • Once you’ve settled on the color palette, use texture to give the look dimension and character. Try a heavy-woven, 100% certified wool cardigan paired with a bias-cut silk long skirt. Texture can also create exaggerated proportions for a trendier option.

  • After balancing color and texture, pile on the layers. Commit to the look by pairing a tailored top and bottom with an oversized vest, jacket, or coat. The extra room allows for dramatic flair and a memorable entrance.

Now that we’ve covered the dos, here’s what to avoid.

  • Doubt. I used to tell clients that successfully pulling off a monochromatic ensemble takes confidence. So don’t slouch or hide your figure in ill-fitting pieces. Stand tall and wear the outfit; don’t let it wear you.

  • The second don’t is choosing fabrics that will fade after one wash. Choose sustainable fabrics such as 100% certified wool, hemp, and Tencel, which are great for cooler weather. Their tight weaves will keep their shape, and when made with natural dyes, they will not bleed or fade. Hand-wash in cold water when suitable.

  • Lastly, don’t forget the shoes! If at all possible, your shoes should be the same color.

What about accessories?

Accessories are the wildcard. Keep them to a minimum so your jewelry, handbag, and watch don’t distract from what you worked so hard to pull off. I suggest opting for metallic jewelry and watches; the handbag may stay within the same color palette but introduce a different texture. If you must have a pop of color, keep it small in proportion to the other accessories.
